Fifth Les Cheneaux Fun Run/Walk Gets Participant Boost From 2005

By Amy Polk

The start of the Les Cheneaux Fun Run/Walk five-mile run is a fast one. The start of the Les Cheneaux Fun Run/Walk five-mile run is a fast one. The fifth Les Cheneaux Fun Run/Walk in Cedarville Monday, July 3, attracted 97 participants who made their way through road construction and otherwise pleasant conditions. The race attracted the strongest participation since the event's inception in 2001.

For the second year in a row, Rosie Trahey of Wayne was the first woman to cross the finish line, logging a time of 37 minutes and 11 seconds. The fastest male runner was Paul Johnston of Raleigh, North Carolina, who completed the race in 28 minutes.

The fastest female walker was Robin Darrow, who completed the five-mile course in 52 minutes and 41 seconds. Doug Sheckler of Cedarville was the first male walker to cross the line, finishing in one hour, 56 seconds.

The largest group entry was the St. Martin's Bay Runners, and they received a basket of gifts donated by Tami Duncan, one of the race's founders. The group had eight members who walked or ran the course through Cedarville.

The event collected money for the award-winning cross country team. Water stations along the course were staffed by Cedarville cross country team members. Coach Ryan Wilson organized the race and provided the "pace car," while cross country team members helped with refreshments, registration, and medal distribution.

Pushing probably the youngest participant in the Fifth Les Cheneaux Fun Run/Walk Race, the St. Martin's Bay Runners (from left) Julie Shaw, Tina Murray, Kathy Walkington, June Bush, and Julie Nichols, all of Blanchard, won the prize for the largest group of participants. Young Emma Murray (in stroller) is five months old. This year's race shirt, given to all race participants, featured a new design created by Andy Conroy, an artist and Cedarville High School graduate. He is attending the Illinois Institute of Art for Computer Animation in Chicago, and he expects to be graduated with a bachelor's degree in December. A piece of his animation will be displayed at the Siggraph International Conference on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques in Boston this August.

The top three winners in each age category for the walking and running divisions received medals, and they are listed below, with the times of other race participants. Times are in minutes unless otherwise noted.
