Charles Harju

Charles Harju Charles Harju Charles E. Harju, 79, of St. Ignace was a U.S. Navy veteran who taught in the St. Ignace school district for 32 years. Mr. Harju died Saturday, April 26, 2008, at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.

Born July 17, 1928, in Newberry, he was the son of Anna and Martin Harju Sr.

Mr. Harju served in the United States Navy from 1926 to 1948 and 1950 to 1951 on the USS Macon. He was a graduate of Newberry High School and earned a bachelor's degree in education, industrial arts and drafting.

Mr. Harju was a life member of the St. Ignace VFW 5114, Military Order of Cooties Pup Tent 51, American Legion Post 74 in Newberry, and AmVets. He was also a member of Free and Accepted Masons 369, Royal Arch Masons 34, Ahmed Shriners of Marquette, and Zion Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Donna (nee Ratliff) Harju; two children and their families, Wilford and Jody Harju, and Abigail and Brett LaLonde; two sisters and their families, Anna Gentz, and Bernice and Sam Bergman; five grandchildren, Brett LaLonde, Rebecca LaLonde, Alicia LaLonde, Devan Harju, and Brian Harju, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Martin Harju Jr.

Services were Tuesday, April 29, at Zion Lutheran Church in St. Ignace with Pastor Tari Stage- Harvey officiating.

Dodson Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
