Charles Fountain

Charles Clayton Fountain, 83, of DeTour Village, was a World War II veteran who then worked for four decades at a local quarry. He died Thursday, December 31, 2009, in Sault Ste. Marie.

He was born May 19, 1926, in DeTour, to Charles “Clayton” and Merle Ann (nee Harris) Fountain.

Mr. Fountain was a lifelong DeTour resident. After graduation from high school, he served in the United States Army in World War II.

He married Wanda Alice Mc- Adam July 21, 1951, at DeTour Union Presbyterian Church.

For 42 years, Mr. Fountain worked at the Drummond Dolomite Quarry, retiring in 1988. For 30 years, he and his wife spent the winters in Fort Pierce, Florida, where he loved to work in a local orange grove.

He was a member of the DeTour Union Presbyterian Church, the Les Cheneaux Lodge 590 of the Free and Accepted Masons, and was a life member of VFW Post 8058 in Fort Pierce.

Mr. Fountain enjoyed traveling, boating, fishing, hunting, and working on his son's farm.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda; two sons and their families, Dennis D. Fountain of DeTour and Gordon and Kathy Fountain of Howell; two daughters and their families, Cynthia and Dennis Bender and Christine Henson and Gary Johnson, all of DeTour; 11 grandchildren and their families, Amie and Melvin Bennett, Jody and Russ Madden, Lindsey and Wyatt Gregory, Stacy Fountain, Jesse Fountain, Emilie Lind, Colton Lind, Samuel and Emily Henson, Derrick and Christie Henson, Nicole and Josh Walker, and Levi Bender, and 10 greatgrandchildren, Emily and Wesley Bennett, Alexis and Riley Madden, Aurora and Sterling Gregory, Darian Patrick, Jovi Henson, and Justice and Jaden Mason. Also surviving is one brother and his family, Merlin and Eileen Fountain of DeTour.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his twin brother, James Fountain.

Private graveside services will be held in the spring at Maple Grove Cemetery in DeTour Township.
