St. Ignace Wrestlers 3-2 at Rogers City Invite

The St. Ignace wrestling team faced strong competition in the Rogers City Invitational and came away with a 3-2 record, while four Saints wrestlers compiled 5-0 marks and two finished at 4-1 Wednesday, December 30.

The Saints defeated Alpena 44- 27, Cheboygan 45-21, and Onaway 44-21 and lost to the host Hurons 40-33 in a close match. The Saints fell to the champions, Gladstone Braves, 51-26.

"Overall I was pleased with our effort, especially since it has been 12 days since we have competed on the mat," said Saints Coach Harvey Bentley. "We had to forfeit four weight classes at 112, 125, 215, and heavyweight. We wrestled tough against Rogers City to lose by only seven points."

Posting 5-0 records was Joey Ostman (171), Galloway Thurston (160), John Evashevski (145), and Billy Bentgen (103).

Richard Bentley (119) and Louie Radecki (130) went 4-1. Robert Sayles (189) and Joe Krause (135) were 3-2, Dan St. Onge (152) was 2-3, and Caleb Litzner (145) was 1-3.

St. Ignace wrestlers in doublefigure wins going into 2010 are led by John Evashevski and Galloway Thurston with 19-1 records, followed by Joey Ostman 18-3, Richard Bentley 16-3, Dan St. Onge 14-7, Billy Bentgen 13-7, and Louie Radecki 12-4.

The Saints, with an 11-6 overall record in dual matches, will entertain Sault Ste. Marie, Onaway, and Mancelona in a quad match at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, January 7. The Saints will compete at the Escanaba Invitational Saturday, January 9, and host Straits Area Conference opponents Rudyard, Mio, and Newberry at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 13. The SAC wrestling league consists of the Saints, Rudyard, Newberry, Sault Ste. Marie, Cheboygan, Rogers City, Onaway, and Mio.
