Saints Grapplers Finish 2010 With Victories Over Onaway, Mancelona

St. Ignace wrestlers closed out the 2010 portion of their season with home victories over the Onaway Cardinals, 42-19, and the Mancelona Ironmen, 46-27, at the St. Ignace Middle School Tuesday, December 21.

This is a young team that Coach Harvey Bentley has put together, and the 13 wrestlers who competed include three seniors, two juniors, seven sophomores, and one freshman.

Coach Harvey Bentley split the Saints squad with seven wrestlers competing at the prestigious Marquette Challenge Saturday, December 18, and 11 wrestlers at the Rudyard Bridge Brawl Friday, December 17.

The Saints, the smallest school competing at Marquette, finished ninth overall among 16 teams.

Marquette Challenge Statistics: Merrill, Wisconsin, which is west of Marinette and North of Wausau, won the event with 216 points, followed by New Lothrop with 207.5, Mason 188, Comstock Park 163, Rogers City 110, Gaylord 107, Iron Mountain 95, Midland 93, St. Ignace 65, Escanaba 61, Marquette 53.5, Pine River 49, Gladstone 45, Ishpeming 24, Gwinn 2, and Sault Ste. Marie 0.


The Saints’ Joe Ostman won the two matches during the home meet and finished second at the Marquette Challenge. Thurston (171) recorded 3-1 and Ostman (189) registered 2-1 with his only setback coming from a 1- 0 score.

Richard Bentley (125) placed fourth with a 1-2 record, Louie Radecki sixth at 2-2, Billy Bentgen (103) sixth at 1-2, and Cody Swagger (135) and Caleb Litzner (140) were 0-2.

“This is one of the strongest tournaments that we will compete in this season,” said Coach Bentley. “It will help prepare this group of athletes for the tournaments down the road.”

William Pechta (145) went 3- 2, Kasey Bunker (125) 2-2, Joe Krause (135) and Dylan Brown (160) 2-3, Levi Thompson (140), Wyatt Orm (152), Dylan LeVeille (189), and Seth Argue (215) were 1-4, and Darren Bates (171) was 0-5.
