Rudyard Bulldogs, Brimley Bays Advance To Volleyball Regionals

(Photograph by Mitch Perry) The Rudyard Bulldogs won their first Class C district championship since 2005 with a three-game sweep over the host Newberry Indians, 25- 17, 25-18, 25-16, Thursday, November 3.

“We have worked hard in preparation for the district tournaments and served 97 percent in the two district games,” said Bulldogs Coach Ellen Perry. “Our intensity level as a team was strong, so we avoided lapses. In the past, that was one of our problems but, in the districts, we played strong.”

The Bulldogs advanced to the Class C regionals at Negaunee to face Iron Mountain Tuesday, November 8.

To Win Over Manistique in District Semifinals

The Rudyard Bulldogs defeated the host Manistique Emeralds 25-20, 25-22, 25-22 in the Class C district semifinals Tuesday, November 1.

“We had one of our best serving percentages, 70 of 72 for 92 percent, during one game this season and maybe in my career as coach in Rudyard,” said Bulldogs Coach Ellen Perry. “We came ready to play, especially on the road. The girls were focused.”

In the first game, Rudyard led from the beginning, trailed by four points in the second game before posting the win, and in the third game had big lead, but Manistique came back only to win by three points.

Brimley Sweeps Pickford To Capture Class D Districts

The Brimley Bays swept the Pickford Panthers 25-22, 27-25, 25-16 to capture the Class D districts at the Karl Parker Gymnasium in Brimley Thursday, November 3.

“I told the girls before the finals that Pickford won the conference and were defending district champions. Relax and play hard and, in the end, we did both,” saod Bays Coach Lisa Corbiere. “We did the little things that are needed to win. Talk, move your feet, pass. Everyone played up to their expectations.”

In the first game, Pickford took a 4-0 lead before Brimley tied the game at 6-6. Later, with the score at 9-9, Taylor Mills served five unanswered points for a 14-9 Bays lead.

Brimley increased the margin to 19-15, but the Panthers stormed back to tie the match at 21 before Whitney Frazier served the final two winning points.

Pickford took a 8-3 lead in game two after Kristi Gough served three unanswered points and Jessie Barras added two points. The Bays tied the score at 15 and, with the score at 20- 20, Koryn Beacom served two points for a 22-20 Pickford lead.

Sophomore Kourtney St. Peter served three consecutive points for a 24-22 Bays advantage before Pickford took a 25-24 lead on serving points by Jessie Barras and Olivia Smith, but the Bays sophomore, Clarissa Kelly, served the final three points for the Brimley two-point win.

The teams were tied at 6-6 in the third game before Brimley’s Tabitha Graham served three points for a 10- 6 lead and, later, Anna Carrick added five services points for a 18-9 lead and went on to win by nine points.

“We played hard, but the ball didn’t bounce our way,” said Panthers Coach Heather Salmi. “I am proud of the girls and their effort throughout the season.”

The Brimley Bays swept the Cedarville Trojans 25-13, 25-14, 25- 12 during the semifinals Wednesday, November 2.

Panthers Sweep Lakers

The Pickford Panthers swept the Mackinac Island Lakers 25-13, 25- 14, 25-12 during the district semifinals Wednesday, November 2.

Panthers statistics: Jessie Barras, nine kills; Kristen Cline, eight kills; Olivia Smith, seven kills.

The Brimley Bays defeated Maplewood Baptist Academy Black Bears 25-18, 25-10, 25-18 Monday, October 31.
