St. Ignace Saints Dorene and Doug Ingalls were selected Coaches of the Year by the coaches association. Dorene and Doug Ingalls of the St. Ignace Saints were named Girls Coaches of the Year by the Michigan High School Coaches Association during ceremonies in Lansing Sunday, November 6.

The coaching couple led the Saints to their third Class C state championship during the 2010- 2011 season with a 26-1 overall record and seventh final four appearance in 12 years at LaSalle High School.

“This is truly a honor for Doug and I to be selected by our peers as Coaches of the Year,” said Dorene Ingalls. “We are very fortunate to have the talent in St. Ignace and coach these young ladies.”

St. Ignace has compiled a 239-55 overall record during the coaching career of the Ingalls. Dorene is the head coach and Doug, who coaches the boys, has played a big part of the girls program.

“How the coaches are selected is a common question that I receive,” said Richard Tompkins, executive director of the Michigan High School Coaches Association. “Each individual sport association is asked to submit names of coaches that they want to see honored. The selection is based on the coach’s team performance during the school year or their entire career.”

The Saints won their first Class C state championship in 1999 (26-1) followed by a second title in 2000 (26-1). The team was state runnerup in 2009-10 (26-1), and won the state championship in 2010-11 (26- 1). St. Ignace won 10 Straits Area Conference titles, with their last league defeat coming January 18, 2008, against Sault Ste. Marie 63- 58.

The Saints have an 85% winning percentage in the Straits Area Conference and an 81% overall mark.
