Job Fair Is April 3

Hospitality Training Included at St. Ignace

Prospective employees are invited to attend the St. Ignace Job Fair Tuesday, April 3, at Little Bear East Arena. The fair will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., with the first hour focused solely on “Service with a Smile” training. Participation in the fair and the training are free of charge.

“Many people are unemployed and the job fair gives them direct access to dozens of employers who are actively seeking employees. You might begin by filling out an application, or you just might walk out with a job,” said Janet Peterson, director of the St. Ignace Chamber of Commerce.

In 2011, 20 employers had tables at the job fair. In 2010, that number was 30. Additionally, educational institutions typically have tables to promote enrollment in places like community colleges and truck driving schools.

Great Start Collaborative will provide daycare on-site during the event.

The first hour, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., will feature a training program on “Service with a Smile.” Participants will receive a certificate of completion for the free training to show to potential employers.

“The idea is to help you apply for a job and also help you to succeed at whatever job you land,” Mrs. Peterson explained. The training program will be conducted by MSU Extension.

Opportunities presented at the Job Fair vary from year to year. Typically, state parks, restaurants, hotels, and other seasonal employers will be represented, but Mrs. Peterson said that businesses in search of permanent employees also use the fair as a way to screen applicants.

The fair is sponsored by the St. Ignace Chamber of Commerce, Michigan Works!, MSU Extension, St. Ignace Area Schools, St. Ignace Downtown Development Authority, and Consolidated Community Schools Services.
