Lucy Romano

Sister Lucy Josephine Romano, 85, of Wheaton, Illinois, a devoted member of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary for 66 years, died Wednesday, May 14, 2014 in Wheaton. She had been a resident of Loretto Convent in Wheaton, of which she was a vital community member.

She was born May 28, 1928, to Philip and Rose (nee Amarose) Romano in Hessel.

Sr. Lucy ministered in Chicago, Wheaton, and Joliet, all in Illinois, and also in Sault Ste. Marie. She taught religious education and CCD, traveling through the area from 1973 to 1984, before moving from the area. She still had family and friends in the area.

She served in early childhood education, and assisted in the provincial offices.

Sr. Lucy enjoyed cooking, baking, and making fudge.

She is survived by a brother, Vern Romano; two sisters and their families, Viola Merritt and Shirley and Edward Patrick; a sister-in-law and her family, Delores Romano; 13 nieces and nephews; 17 greatnieces and great-nephews; 11 great-great-nieces and great-greatnephews, and 68 Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary Sisters.

In addition to her parents, Sr. Lucy was preceded in death by a brother, Philip, and a brother-in-law, Gene Merritt.

Visitation was Monday, May 19, from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Loretto Convent in Wheaton. Words of Remembrance were at 6:30 p.m., and the funeral liturgy took place at 7 p.m.

Interment was Tuesday, May 20, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Michael Cemetery in Wheaton.

Williams-Kampp Funeral Home in Wheaton assisted the family with arrangements.
