Kids Go Fishing Saturday

Kids Fishing Day will be at Castle Rock Ponds Saturday, June 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A community event promoting outdoor recreation and family fun, it is free of charge and corresponds with the state’s Free Fishing Weekend. Fishing licenses will not be required. The ponds can be accessed from Castle Rock Road in St. Ignace Township. Refreshments and prizes will be provided.

Youth prizes will include poles, tackle, and T-shirts. Adult prizes will include a trail camera and a deer blind. Winners must be present to receive prizes.

The odds of catching a fish have been improved this year by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, which donated 750 brook trout. The Straits Area Sportsmen’s Club will provide a 1,500- gallon tank stocked with rainbow trout.

“We’re encouraging outdoor recreation in the age of electronics,” said club president Gary Gorniak. “Fishing has been a great way to do it for years. When you get kids outdoors, they get smiles on their faces.”

Kids Fishing Day is often a first time angling for youngsters. Many three-and-four-year-olds have been introduced to the sport at this program, and many parents have said that Kids Fishing Day is their first angling experience with their children, Mr. Gorniak said.

Owing to limited supplies, participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing equipment. Insect repellent is also advised. For any questions, call Gary Gorniak at (810) 516-2000.
