New Jail Is a Small Price To Pay for Safety

To the Editor:

I am writing this letter in support of the Mackinac County Jail Bond Proposal that will be on the ballot for the general election Tuesday, November 8.

I was a member of the Jail Study Committee, which met during 2011 and 2012. I also had the opportunity to tour our current county jail. Since he was elected in 2004, Sheriff Scott Strait and his staff have done an outstanding job of keeping our jail clean, quiet, and secure. Unfortunately, the current jail facility is outdated and fails to meet the needs of its staff or the inmates. It is also overcrowded. These factors make the jail more expensive to operate and leave our jail staff and community vulnerable to unnecessary safety concerns.

Please vote in support of a new county jail facility. It’s a small price to pay for the safety of our community.
