Comets Boys Take Possession of Conference Title

The Mackinaw City boys basketball team earned sole possession of the 2016-2017 Northern Lakes Conference championship Monday, February 27, by defeating Harbor Light Christian 74-61. The game was the last conference one this season for the Comets (14-4, 13-1). A victory over Wolverine a few days earlier had already clinched at least a share of the championship for Mackinaw City before their victory Monday assured no team would catch them.

“Tonight was a great night for the Comets,” Mackinaw City Coach John Martin said. “Conference titles have been few and far between for the Mackinaw City boys which makes this win, and the outright title, even better. We won our way to this title.”

Mr. Martin said it was a special night for seniors Kash O’Brien and Michael Elliott as the championship is their first; the school previously had not won a title since 2008. The pair was again the Comets’ top scorers as O’Brien tallied 34 points, with Elliott adding 20 of his own.

Mackinaw City opened up a 21- 14 lead in the first quarter and extended it to 43-23 at halftime. The Swordsmen led the third quarter scoring 13-12 and again outscored the Comets 25-19 in the fourth but were unable to close the gap.

“The one thing you are guaranteed in going to Harbor Light is that they will fight, scratch, and battle you for 32 minutes and once again that’s exactly what we got, a 32-minute battle,” Mr. Martin said.

Comets statistics: Kash O’Brien, 34 points; Michael Elliott, 20 points; Robert Martin, seven points; Jarred Hartman, seven points; Logan Smith, four points; Evan Cronk, two points.

Swordsmen statistics: James Kersting, 24 points; Nathan Schiel, 14 points; Isaac Graham, 10 points; Nick Rhudy, 10 points; Gabe Kruger, three points.
