Mackinac Island State Park Offers Annex Lots for Auction Again

The Mackinac Island State Park Commission is once again offering three lots in Hubbard’s Annex for sale at public auction. The lots were offered at auction earlier this summer, but no bids were received. Some interested people came forward just after the auction closed, however, said state park Director Phil Porter, prompting the auction to be opened again.

The lots are in the city’s cottage zoning district, which is the most restrictive on the Island. The zoning ordinance requires a lot density of no less than one dwelling unit per acre. Because the state park lots are only a half an acre in size, some potential buyers were discouraged, Mr. Porter told the park commission at a meeting Friday, September 29.

The new owners would have to petition the city’s Planning Commission and city council for a variance to build on the lots. The city is known to grant variance requests, Mr. Porter said, adding the that the prospective bidders are confident they can secure the necessary variances.

Sealed bids for the lots must be received by Tuesday, October 31. The bids will be opened the following day Wednesday, November 1.

Those interested in purchasing the lots can visit the state park’s Web site at www.mackinacparks.com/hubbards annex-auction.
