Dewey Smith

Dewey Smith Dewey Smith Dewey Vernon Smith, 87, of Harrison, was a longtime teacher, coach, and school guidance counselor. Mr. Smith passed away peacefully Sunday, January 21, 2018, at Isabella County Medical Care Facility in Mount Pleasant.

He was born September 9, 1930, to Frederick Herbert and Ellen (nee Wilson) Smith in Rudyard Township in Chippewa County.

After he was graduated from Pickford High School, Mr. Smith honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

He married Greta Janet Beacom August 16, 1951, in Pickford.

Mr. Smith was graduated from Western Michigan University, where he earned a master’s degree in education.

He was employed as a teacher and coach in Lake City, Manchester, and Reed City for several years. In 1965, he moved to Harrison from Reed City. He retired from Harrison Community Schools in the mid-1980s after several years working as a guidance counselor.

Mr. Smith was a longtime member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Harrison.

He was an avid deer hunter, fisherman, and all-around sports fan. He especially took pride in rooting for the Detroit Tigers. On July 2, 2015, he was awarded a 50-year bronze medal and certificate from the Joslin Diabetes Center, recognizing him as a role model and mentor for both diabetic family members and former students.

Some of Mr. Smith’s greatest memories were made with his family at Camp Peaceful, a hunting camp in the Upper Peninsula, owned by the Smith family since 1952.

He is survived by his wife and best friend of 66 years, Greta; a daughter and her family, Diane and Mike Wood of Harrison; a son and his family, Scott and Margaret Smith of Prudenville; four grandchildren, Benjamin and Tara Wood of Iron Mountain, Betsy and Chris Ulicki of Harrison, Hayley Smith of Wyandotte, and Zachary Smith of Harrison; two step-grandchildren, Elizabeth Giffen of Lansing and Jeremy Beauregard of Mount Pleasant, and four great-grandchildren, Damian and Morgan Ulicki and Alysia and Mia Wood. He is also survived by a sister and her family, Mary Ellen Hessel of Pellston; a brother and his family, Donald “Pete” and Evelyn Smith of Adrian, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by eight brothers, Albert, Wilson, Lyle, Jay, Elwin, John, Frank, and Harry.

Celebration of life services will be held Saturday, February 3, at 1 p.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Harrison with Reverend Vaughn Peterson officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to time of the service at the church. Military honors will be held immediately following the service under the auspices of the Department of the Army and Harrison American Legion Post 404 Honor Guard.

Inurnment will be in Oaklawn Chapel Gardens in Sault Ste. Marie.

Mr. Smith’s family will be creating a scholarship to be awarded to a Harrison High School graduate, and donations can be sent to: Scott Smith, 107 Indian Oaks Trail, Prudenville, MI 48651.

Stocking Funeral Home in Harrison is assisting the family with arrangements.
