The evening was a special one in Mackinaw City, since the game included a ceremony for the induction of former athlete James “Jim” Mack and coach and administrator Steve Balyo into the Mackinaw City Public Schools Athletic Hall of Fame. The Comets (7-5, 6-2) had their full roster ready Friday as they pulled ahead early and stayed in the lead throughout the rest of the game.

“Tonight was as close to a complete game as we have had this season,” Mackinaw City Coach John Martin said. “For only the second time in 12 games, I had a complete roster available and we were able to convert that into 32 minutes of excellent defensive pressure. The pressure started at the top with Josh Julian and became infectious throughout the team. Josh definitely raised our intensity level and it was good to see everyone follow suit.”

The Comets outscored the Wildcats 20-5 in the first quarter, with their lead not being threatened for the rest of the night. Mackinaw City went on to lead 38-11 at halftime and 50-18 after the third quarter. The Comets would outscore Alba 16-2 in the game’s final quarter.

Mr. Mack and the late Mr. Balyo make up the third induction class into the school’s athletic hall of fame.

Comets statistics: Kal O’Brien, 13 points; Jarred Hartman, 12 points; Logan Smith, 10 points; Nolan LaLonde, eight points; Robert Martin, seven points; Hunter Malczynski, six points; Evan Cronk, four points; Josh Julian, four points; Gage Russ, two points.
