Brimley Bays Edge Trojans, Tie for EUP Conference Lead

By Kevin R. Hess

The Brimley Bays avenged an earlier loss to Cedarville by defeating the Trojans 62-56 Friday, January 26, in Brimley. Brimley came into the game with just one conference loss, to the Trojans, and Cedarville came in undefeated in the EUP. The teams are now tied atop the conference with identical 4-1 records.

A loss for the Bays would have dropped Brimley two games behind the Trojans for the conference lead, plus Cedarville would have held the tiebreaker between the two. Now the conference is wide open, with both Brimley and Cedarville having only one loss, and Engadine close behind with two losses.

Brimley had balanced scoring as four players reached double figures, led by Zach Gross with 15, including three three-point field goals and a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line.

“We had a huge game from Zach Gross on both ends of the floor and I was really happy with how we battled, even when down late,” said Bays Coach Matt Bathey. “We made some huge free throws.”

Kaleb Johanson scored 14, Tristan Lyons had 11, and Sam Hopper recorded 10 points. Fairchild led the Trojans with 14 points. Trevor Kohlmann netted 13.

Brimley (11-2, 4-1 EUP) will travel to Engadine Friday, February 2, and then host Sault Ste. Marie for senior night Tuesday, February 6. Cedarville (10-3, 4-1 EUP) will host Rudyard Friday, February 2, and Johannesburg- Lewiston Monday, February 5.
