Comets Boys Basketball Team Topples Alanson

By Erich T. Doerr

The Mackinaw City boys basketball team was in the unusual position of playing a road game at home Wednesday night, January 24, as they defeated Alanson 72-54 in Northern Lakes Conference action. This game was originally to be played in Alanson, but was moved to Mackinaw City due to court repairs. The Vikings were still officially the home team for the game and wore their white uniforms as such, while the Comets (6-5, 5-2) suited up in the blue jerseys they wear on the road.

“Tonight we played a consistent 32 minutes,” Mackinaw City Coach John Martin said. “We applied some pressure defensively and put the pace of the game more to our liking. Josh Julian and Hunter Malczynski did a great job of creating turnovers and we had a large group contribute on the offensive side to open this one up in the second half.”

The game was close early on as Mackinaw City led Alanson by just six points, 15-9, after the first quarter with a seven-point edge, 33-26, at halftime. The Comets pulled away in the second half with a 21- 17 advantage in the third quarter before outscoring the Vikings 18-11 in the fourth.

Comets statistics: Kal O’Brien, 18 points; Logan Smith, 16 points; Hunter Malczynski, 10 points; Robert Martin, eight points; Gage Russ, eight points; Jarred Hartman, seven points; Josh Julian, three points; Nolan LaLonde, two points.

Vikings statistics: Alex Weiss, 14 points; Geo Vickers, 13 points; Isaac Kroll, nine points; Monty Logan, seven points; Christian Spiegl, six points; Lucas Plastino, five points.
