Engadine Eagles Boys Win Over DeTour Raiders

By Stephen King

A 65-28 win for the Engadine Eagles boys over the DeTour Raiders Friday, January 26, leaves the Raiders at 10-1 for the season and the Eagles at 5-6.

Right from the first tip off, the Eagles started using their run-and-gun offense. Both Scout Bigger and Max Butkovich were working hard inside, controlling the paint on both ends of the floor, while Andrew Blanchard was driving and hitting.

Coach Walter Hansen started to use his bench players with only about two minutes gone. The second quarter saw more of the same. At just over the five-minute mark in the third period, Max Butkovich drained one from the arc and the running clock began.

In what was the highlight reel for this game for the DeTour Raiders, freshman Josh Newell, who had just been moved up to the varsity this game, dumped in three three-pointeres in the fourth quarter. It did nothing to challenge the Eagles lead, but it sure did give the Raiders fans something to cheer about.

After the game, the Eagles’ Andrew Blanchard said, “It feels good to get this win. It was a good team win. We all worked real hard for this one, and tonight, we were able to play Eagles basketball again. We worked the ball well, kept the pace fast, and kept finding the open man.”

Coach Hansen said, “It was a good win tonight. We had some losses against some of the better teams. And we know DeTour is struggling this year, but they played hard tonight and I have to give them credit. They gave us all they had and never gave up. They keep improving, but our guys played well tonight and we got the win.”
